My MYO Story

The past three years have been life changing not only for our daughter Allyson for performing with such a fantastic group of young men and women, but for our whole family as well. In 2009-10 when Allyson was in grade 5 we heard about a group called The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York. It sounded interesting, but became even more so when we heard the choir director was none other than Ally’s Chorus teacher Mr. Knapp. Allyson auditioned and we were thrilled to hear she had been accepted to the Suffolk Children’s Choir of MYO. The next three years would be some of the best for her and for our family. It started with taking her to practice each week. I would try to make my work schedule around Thursday nights so I could take her. It was our time to bond!  Allyson met so many nice kids and we met so many nice parents. I would help take attendance as the kids came in for rehearsal and I even helped out backstage at some of the concerts making sure the kids were supervised and escorting kids where they needed to go. Over the past three years Allyson has performed at The Staller Center at Stony Brook University, The Performing Arts Center at Adelphi University, Hofstra University, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.  We sat there in our seats in two of the most famous halls in the country and cried as our daughter sang with her choir.  They sounded like angels and they got the standing ovation that they deserved!  This past year was also special as the choir was split into two groups since it had grown so much. Her new choir director Ms. Dominick is a perfect fit and the kids love her.  I guess what I’m really trying to say is that MYO has forever changed Allyson and our entire family. What we have all experienced over the last several years is something we will never, ever forget!

MYO Performs the National Anthem

Our MYO ensembles had a wonderful time performing the National Anthem for the Long Island Ducks (Suffolk Principal Orchestra on 9/19), the Stony Brook Seawolves (Suffolk Youth Chorale on 10/11), and for the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum (Treble Choirs on 10/25). Looking forward to more anthem performances for the Islanders on January 19 (Suffolk Concert Choir) and March 29 (Nassau Symphonic Choir), and for the NY Mets on May 2 (Nassau Concert Choir) and June 13 (Suffolk Youth Chorale).
